Tongue tie is when the piece of skin under your baby’s tongue is shorter or tighter than usual. The restricted movement of the tongue can make it difficult for them to breast or bottle feed, as tongue movement is key for them here.
For most babies this is mild, and surprisingly hard to diagnose. It is usually suggested if your baby is having feeding issues, prompting a physical examination by a qualified professional. For more severe tongue ties, contact a professional homeopath for individualised support.
Symptoms suggesting a mild tongue tie may be:
- Latching being a challenge
- Feeding for long period, or short and very often
- Coughing, choking, dribbling during feeds
- Struggling to put on weight.
Tongue tie is only one of a number of possible causes of these symptoms, and I would always suggest using feeding support workers and clinics during these times. Their knowledge and experience is often vast, and support for mum and baby is paramount. It’s really hard for everyone.
If a qualified professional has diagnosed a tongue tie, they may offer a tongue tie division. This is where they will cut the skin between the baby’s tongue and bottom of their mouth, to allow for more extended movement.
This can be a hard decision for families to make. So be sure to take the time to consider your options, and fully understand what is being recommended and why.
Most babies recover very quickly from a tongue tie division. Their skin heals so quickly. However, in some cases it can be a traumatic experience for both babies and adults. Below are some homeopathic remedies that could help with this recovery.
Arnica montana
Arnica is recommended for most physical traumas. It lessens swelling and bruising, and aids recovery.
Aconite
Aconite is the homeopathic shock remedy. This procedure is of course going to be a big shock to your baby, and possibly to you. This however should subside reasonably quickly. If it doesn’t, if the symptoms of great fear, wide eyes, restlessness and pain (if appropriate) continue, consider this remedy for baby or an adult that was present for the procedure.
Calendula
It is likely that your baby’s skin will heal quickly from this procedure. If this is not the case, this remedy could help with the healing of the wound.
