Homeopathy is amazing for treating short terms problems for yourself, your family, and your friends. So many homeopaths I know decided to become homeopaths when they started treating their children.
What can you do to really help your child when they have a fever at 2am?
When they fall and bang their knee, what can help it heal quickly and not get infected?
How do you deal with that cough or clogged up nose that just won’t go away?
(And usually, all these things happen when you are away on holiday, of course!)
Homeopathy is the answer to all those questions.
But – and here comes the issue for many parents keen to self-prescribe for their kids and themselves – how do you choose from the hundreds of remedies available for many common issues?
Below are some of my tips to help.
Or, if you would like to have a consultation, where we discuss these symptoms and I will prescribe homeopathic remedies, please go here.
Objectivity
The closer you are to the person, the harder it can be to see the symptoms objectively and so to be able to choose the right remedy. It’s possibly hardest when it is yourself, with your kids being a close second. Having said that many many people successfully treat their kids with first aid remedies. This comes from practice and starting to get to know the remedies for yourself, and how your family respond to them.
The Three-Legged Stool
In homeopathic college we are taught about the three-legged stool. If you have three strong symptoms that indicate a remedy, then this is a really good starting point.
But what is a strong symptom? One thing that is useful in acute prescribing, that is prescribing on symptoms that have only been around for a few days or so, maximum two weeks, is when the symptoms are different to the normal function of the person. This is when knowing the person really well is really useful!
So, if a person normally doesn’t drink much water, but since the start of their cough they are really thirsty and drinking loads of water, that is significant as it is different to them normally. Other very useful symptoms are what homeopaths call modalities. That is, what makes the symptoms better or worse.
Keynote Symptoms
As you use homeopathy more you will begin to learn the keynote symptoms of a remedy. These are like the headline symptoms of the remedy. For Pulsatilla a keynote is the changeable nature of the symptoms – they are not constant for long. For Belladonna a keynote is red, everything. These are strong indications for that remedy. But it’s also important to look at the full picture alongside them.
Most Important – Practice
There really is no substitute for practice here. Remember homeopathy on an acute level can do very little harm. Look up the full symptoms, then decide on the best matched remedy. Give a dose, and then wait. Be patient, which is really hard when you have a poorly kid, but try. Make sure you don’t give up on that remedy, and try another, before you have waited to see if there is a response.
